After we retired, Saundra and I built a vacation home in the lakes region of New Hampshire. As veteran music lovers, we were thrilled to learn about the summer performances at the Heifitz Music Institute in Wolfboro. We attended regularly and were especially interested in the student recitals. We would try to identify those of unique talent who showed great promise for the future. None stood out more than Dmitry Volkov. Not only was he a gifted soloist of virtuoso caliber, but his ensemble work was equally stellar. He radiated charm and his stage presence was captivating. Saundra, entranced, sought him out and would buy him cookies during intermissions. We became friendly and had him to dinner. His charisma certainly extended to his personal relationships. He kept in touch till the Spring of 2014. We surmised that he was absorbed in career-building. A year later we googled him, and were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of his demise. The music world has lost a glowing young star, and we have lost a good, kind and vital friend.
